Counter-Programming

What a perfect counter-programming move by TCM to run Face In The Crowd against the US Presidential inauguration today - Elia Kazan's story of a local yokel who goes from trouble with the law to the heights of popularity with the ordinary people of America, turning into a false, manipulative scoundrel on the way...

Questions for Noah Cowan, Co-Director of the Toronto International Film Festival
Organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival seem quite proud of this year's lineup, in particular new festival co-director Noah Cowan is boasting about a diverse lineup of some 335 films this yea that includes more than 100 world premieres. Now in its 30th year, Toronto has become a key destination that ushers in the fall movie season for industry and audiences alike. Cowan knows the Toronto fest quite well, having started at the event as a box office volunteer while in high school in 1981, later studying in Toronto and Montreal. He joined the event as a programmer in 1989 when he co-founded the Midnight Madness program and was named Associate Director in 1997. With the Toronto festival approaching its 30th anniversary this year, and Noah well settled into his position, we decided to send him a few questions by email. The day after announcing the full lineup at a press conference in Toronto he sent an email with thoughts about the Toronto festival and other events as well. To mark the opening of the event tonight, we are re-publishing the interview in its entirety.(09/08/05)
"Eggleston" Paints a Solid Box office Opener; "Penguins" Continue to Charm
Palm Pictures' "William Eggleston in the Real World" is the latest doc to canvas the specialty box office summit, taking the number one position as ranked on a per screen basis last weekend. Empire Pictures' "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" expanded and weaved further up the iW BOT chart, increasing its screen average well into its initial release, while TLA rolled out "Three Dancing Slaves" at an exclusive engagement, placing third on the chart. Also over the weekend, Focus Features debuted "The Constant Gardener," performing solidly on well over 1,000 screens. And, summer stalwarts "March of the Penguins," "Broken Flowers," and "The Great Raid" were again the top three individual earners closing out the final summer holiday weekend. Brian Brooks reports.(09/08/05)
Egoyan's "Truth" Coming to Toronto After MPAA Rating Appeal Rejection
The version of "Where The Truth Lies," Atom Egoyan's new film, screening here at the Toronto International Film Festival is the "Cannes cut" or the version seen before Egoyan attempted to appease the Motion Picture Association of America by re-editing the picture. Egoyan, en route to Toronto for the North American debut of his new film, lost his appeal to the MPAA in Los Angeles Thursday, with an NC-17 rating upheld by the organization according to distributor ThinkFilm. For the U.S. release, the company is inclined to release the film unrated and revert to Egoyan's original version. Eugene Hernandez reports from Toronto.(09/08/05)
Meet Me in St. Tropez: Olivier Ducastel & Jacques Martineau's "Côte d'Azur"
Flirting with the conventions of the door-slamming theatrical sex farce and the mistaken- (sexual) identity romp, Ducastel and Martineau again wrestle with sexual identity, yet without burrowing so deep that any of their characters get irrevocably hurt. The genial optimism of Ducastel-Martineau often takes consequence entirely out of the equation, and, in the case of "Côte d'Azur," for the first time they run the risk of short-changing some of their characters, transforming their sexual crises into sitcom fodder. Yet if you ultimately choose to play along, you'll feel greatly rewarded by the film's back-bendingly joyous denouement. Michael Koresky reviews "Côte d'Azur" with responses from Kristi Mitsuda and Eric Hynes.(09/07/05)
